Why Everyone Is Photogenic

30/06/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

“I never look good in photos.”

It’s something I hear all the time. Whether it’s at an event, during a portrait session, or just in a chat about photography, people often believe they aren’t photogenic.

But the truth is, everyone is photogenic. Yes, everyone.

The problem usually isn’t how you look. It’s how the photo was taken. Poor lighting, awkward timing or stiff posing can make anyone feel uncomfortable in pictures.

A good photograph should bring out your personality, not hide it.

Being photogenic simply means feeling comfortable and being yourself in front of the camera. And that’s something anyone can do with the right support.

As a photographer based in Cranleigh, I’ve worked with many people who were nervous or unsure before their session.

Some were convinced they’d never like a photo of themselves. But once they relaxed and felt more at ease, they were surprised by what they saw. They looked like themselves. Happy, confident and natural.

One of the keys to looking good in a photo is feeling at ease. That’s why I always take time to chat before I even pick up the camera.

Whether I’m photographing someone in their garden, at their workplace or in a quiet café, that little bit of conversation makes a big difference.

You forget about the camera, and that’s when the best photos happen.

Natural light or soft artificial light also plays a big part. Soft daylight or big softboxes are gentle on the skin and bring out natural tones.

I prefer using the light we find around us, or recreating that light artificially. It creates a more relaxed and flattering photo.

What you wear matters too. You don’t need to buy anything new, but wearing something you feel good in can help. Confidence shows, and it makes a photo feel more genuine.

Most of all, being photogenic is about how you see yourself.

We’re often too harsh when we look in the mirror. We spot every little thing. But a photo, taken with care and thought, can help you see yourself as others do. The full picture. And that full picture is more than enough.

I’ve watched people look at their photos and smile. Not because they looked perfect, but because they looked like themselves. Relaxed, open and alive.

So if you’ve ever said, “I’m not photogenic,” I’d like you to think again. You might just need the right photographer. Someone who takes the time, listens, and sees the real you.

No need to pose. No need to perform. Just be yourself.

And if you’re curious to see how good a photo of you can really look, why not give it a go? Whether it’s for your website, your business profile or just for you, I’d love to help.

Get in touch and let’s show you how photogenic you really are.
