How to Select a Portrait Photographer That Aligns with Your Vision

11/03/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

The magic in portrait photography lies in capturing a story, your story.

Imagine walking into a photography studio to be greeted by someone who understands what makes you uniquely you and delivers photos that align with your vision.

When the photographer and their subject work together, initial hesitation to appear in front of the camera is quickly forgotten. As the session progresses, new levels of confidence are found.

I love it when this happens. But it doesn’t happen by accident. Here’s how to select a portrait photographer who gets you and your vision.

1 – Look for a specialism and style

Photography is a broad art form, covering more genres than I can count on both hands.

The difference between studio portraits, with their controlled lighting and intentional background, and environmental portraits captured in the natural light offered by mother nature, is night and day.

When choosing a photographer, look for one who specialises in your preferred style. Don’t try to shoehorn your vision into the style demonstrated by their portfolio; this never works!

Finding a photographer with expertise and experience in a particular shooting style will enhance the quality and impact of your portraits.

2 – Look for a personal connection

Before booking a shoot, take a little time to learn about the photographer. By understanding their professional background, hobbies and interests, you get an insight into their personality and working style.

Remember, the best photographs come from sessions with genuine rapport between the subject and the photographer. A shared laugh, a mutual interest, or even a shared vision for the world can transform a good session into a great one.

3 – Look for feedback

Seek out what others have said about their experiences working with the photographer. Positive feedback and glowing testimonials are good indicators of the experience you are likely to enjoy with the photographer and their ability to capture stunning images.

4 – Look for editing expertise

We can’t underestimate the power of editing.

Some photographers prefer a minimal touch, slapping on a quick and dirty Lightroom present to give their photos a ‘signature’ colour style. Others invest hours in their editing to deliver a fashion magazine-style retouch. I’m definitely in a latter camp.

Consider what style aligns with your vision and ensure your photographer’s editing philosophy matches your expectations for well-edited, captivating portraits.

5 – Look for packages and pricing

Photographers typically offer two main pricing models: all-inclusive packages and In-Person Sales (IPS).

Like the ones I offer, all-inclusive packages provide a clear, upfront cost that includes the session, an agreed number of edits, and high-resolution digital files.

On the other hand, IPS packages might seem more affordable initially, but costs quickly escalate (significantly so!) as you’re presented with various upselling tactics for framed prints and heirloom albums.

Before booking the shoot, understand all of the costs involved. Find a photographer who aligns with your expectations and budget.

Choosing the right portrait photographer requires a little work, but that work pays off when your edited images are ready.
