Why You Look Weird in Photos

22/08/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Have you ever looked at a photo of yourself and thought, “Do I really look like that?”

You are not alone. Many people feel uncomfortable when they see pictures of themselves.

It is not just about being self-conscious. There are genuine reasons why you might see yourself as looking unusual in photos, even though others see you as looking perfectly normal.

In this blog post, we will look at why this happens and how you can feel better about how you appear in front of the camera.

You’re Used to the Mirror Version of Yourself

One of the biggest reasons you might not like how you look in photos is that you are used to seeing yourself in the mirror. That version of you is flipped. Your parting is on the other side. Your smile tilts a different way. You are used to the reflection, not the real version.

When you see a photo, it shows how everyone else sees you. It is not flipped. It is the “true” view. But to you, it looks off.

Small features can look different from what you are used to. This can make your face look unfamiliar, which is why it might feel wrong or strange.

Camera Lenses Can Distort

The lens on a camera can affect the way your face looks. Phone cameras, especially when held close to your face, can make your nose look bigger and your face look stretched. This is because wide-angle lenses slightly distort anything that is close to them.

It is not your face that is strange, it is the lens.

Professional photographers know how to use longer lenses and the right distance to make people look natural. A small change in how the photo is taken can make a big difference in how you appear.

Bad Lighting Changes Everything

Harsh light from above can cast shadows under your eyes. Overhead lighting can make your face look tired or washed out. If the light is too strong or uneven, it can highlight features you are usually not aware of. Bad lighting is one of the main reasons people feel they look worse in photos than they do in real life.

Soft, natural light from the side or front is far more flattering. This is why photographers are so particular about light. It shapes the way your face is seen.

You Caught Yourself Mid-Blink or Mid-Talk

Most photos you dislike are probably ones where you were not ready. A candid shot taken when you are talking or blinking can catch your face in an odd expression. Your mouth might be half open or your eyes half closed.

These moments happen in everyday life, but you do not notice them because they pass so quickly.

When a camera freezes that split second, it can make you look unusual, even though it is completely normal. This is why it is important to take several photos and choose the best one, rather than judging yourself on a single frame.

You’re Overly Critical of Yourself

Most of us are our own worst critics. You notice tiny things about yourself that no one else sees.

A hair out of place. A slight tilt in your smile. One eye looking slightly bigger than the other. These are details your friends and family either do not notice or do not care about.

When you see a photo, you tend to focus on those small flaws. You zoom in. You analyse. You forget about the setting, your smile, or the lovely moment being captured.

A good photo is about the feeling, not about perfection.

Practice Makes You Feel More Natural

The more often you are in front of a camera, the more comfortable you become. People who are photographed regularly often look better in photos simply because they know how to relax. They know their best angles. They understand how to hold their posture and soften their facial expressions.

This does not mean you need to pose stiffly. But if you work with a photographer who makes you feel at ease, it is much easier to be yourself. When you are relaxed, your true self shines through in the photo.

How a Photographer Can Help

A professional photographer can guide you through all of this. We know how to use light, angles, and timing to ensure you look your best. We offer gentle guidance to help you relax, and we wait for the perfect moment to capture a natural expression.

You do not need to “perform” in front of the camera. You just need to be yourself, and it is our job to show that in the final image.

So next time you see a photo of yourself and think, “Why do I look so strange?”, remember that you are not alone. It is not about how you look. It is about how the photo was taken and how you are used to seeing yourself.

If you would like to feel more confident in front of the camera, I would love to help. Whether it is for your personal brand, a portrait, or a special event, we can work together to capture you at your best.
