You’ve probably seen them. Old family portraits with stiff faces, clasped hands and eyes wide with fear. The kind where no one looks comfortable or happy to be there.
Those Victorian-era photos had their reasons for being so serious, but let’s be honest, no one wants to look like that in their own portrait today.
Yet somehow, that nervous, awkward energy still creeps into modern photography sessions.
People worry about how to stand, where to put their hands and whether they’re smiling in the right way. That pressure to get it right can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera.
But I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to pose like a statue or smile like you’re in a school photo.
Photography should feel natural. It should capture the real you, your personality, your style and your mood on the day.
When I photograph people, whether it’s for a brand session, a headshot or a family portrait, I focus on making you feel relaxed. That’s when the magic happens. When you forget the camera is even there.
One of the biggest compliments I receive is when someone says, “I didn’t feel like I was being photographed.” That tells me I’ve done my job properly.
My aim is always to create a space where you feel comfortable just being yourself. Not performing and not pretending. Just being.
Instead of stiff poses, I might ask you to walk down a path, lean against a fence or chat to someone off-camera.
I might suggest you sit in your favourite chair or hold your coffee cup like you normally would.
These small, natural movements help you settle into your own rhythm. And it shows in the photos. You look like you, not a version of you that has been forced into a pose.
A big part of this comes down to trust. I will guide you through the session, but I won’t bark instructions or constantly adjust your posture.
I’m not chasing perfection. I’m looking for real moments, the kind that make people say, “That’s exactly how I remember you.”
I’ve worked with all kinds of people. From busy professionals who hate having their photo taken, to children who won’t sit still, to couples who just want to enjoy the moment together.
In every case, I focus on making the session feel less like a formal photoshoot and more like time well spent.
We might walk through the woods, chat in a coffee shop or use your home or workspace as the backdrop. Wherever we are, I will help you feel at ease.
If you’re someone who has put off having photos taken because you’re worried you’ll look awkward, I get it. Most of us aren’t used to being in front of the camera.
That’s why it’s so important to work with someone who can help you relax and actually enjoy the experience.
So no, I won’t make you pose like a scared Victorian child. You won’t be asked to hold your breath or freeze your smile.
Instead, we will create photos that feel honest and warm. Photos that capture who you really are.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your headshot, booking a brand session or simply want a few good photos of you as you are now, get in touch.
I’d love to have a chat and see how we can make it feel natural and easy.
