Why a Photographer Who Is a Jack of All Trades Is a Master of None

15/06/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

You’ve probably seen it before. A photographer’s website that offers a bit of everything – weddings, landscapes, pets, fashion, commercial products, food, families, sports, architecture.

At first glance, it might seem like a sign of talent. After all, surely they are a highly skilled professional if they can turn their hand to every genre of photography?

But when it comes to photography, trying to be good at everything often means not truly mastering anything.

That’s exactly why I chose to specialise in photographing people – and only people.

My work focuses on portraits and headshots, brand photography, and events. These are the areas where I can bring real value to my clients.

I don’t shoot food. I don’t photograph pets or products. I concentrate on people – because that’s where my experience, skill and passion lie.

Before I became a photographer, I spent almost two decades working as a Chartered Financial Planner. That might sound like a completely different world, but the truth is, the two careers are more closely linked than you might think.

Financial planning is all about working closely with individuals and business owners, understanding their personal goals, listening carefully to their concerns, and building relationships based on trust.

That experience taught me how to put people at ease. It taught me how to listen. It taught me the value of preparation and attention to detail.

All of those qualities now shape the way I work as a photographer.

Why I Chose to Specialise in People Photography

Just like in financial planning, photography is not about ticking boxes or delivering the same thing to every client. It’s about understanding people.

What they want, how they want to feel, and how they want to be seen.

Photographing people is a skill that takes time to develop. It’s not just about lighting or camera settings. It’s about body language, communication, and knowing how to help someone relax in front of the lens. It’s about drawing out personality and capturing a moment that feels real.

By focusing solely on photographing people, I’ve been able to refine my approach.

I know how to plan a shoot so that it’s relaxed and enjoyable. I know how to guide clients through the process without making it feel staged. And I know how to create images that feel natural, confident and full of character.

Why a Specialist Makes a Difference

If you’re looking for professional photographs of yourself or your team, it makes sense to work with someone who does that kind of work all the time.

Someone who understands what looks good on camera. Someone who knows how to bring out the best in people.

A jack-of-all-trades might offer portraits one day and product photography the next. But the results can be inconsistent. The experience might feel disjointed. And the final images may not hit the mark.

When you work with a specialist, you know what to expect.

My portfolio is focused and consistent. The style is clear. The results are polished but authentic.

Whether you’re booking a personal headshot, a brand shoot for your business, or photography for a live event, you’ll see the same level of care and professionalism in every image.

It’s About More Than Just the Photos

Photographing people well means more than just taking a nice picture. It’s about preparation, communication and trust.

I take the time to get to know each client. I ask about their goals for the shoot, how they plan to use the images, and what kind of message they want to share.

This level of attention comes naturally to me, thanks to my background. In financial planning, you learn quickly that no two clients are the same – and the same is true in photography.

Each person, each brand, each event is unique. That’s why I tailor every session to suit the individual.

Passion for Working with People

Most of all, I genuinely enjoy working with people. I enjoy hearing their stories, learning about their businesses, and helping them feel seen.

There’s something deeply rewarding about capturing a portrait that feels honest, or documenting the atmosphere of a live event in a way that brings the day back to life.

That passion and focus are what set a specialist apart.

I don’t try to be everything to everyone – and that’s a strength, not a weakness. It means that when you book a session with me, you’re getting the full benefit of experience, attention, and enthusiasm for one thing: photographing people.

Let’s Work Together

If you’re looking for professional photography that puts people at the centre – whether it’s portraits, headshots, brand photography or event coverage – I’d love to hear from you.

I work with individuals, solopreneurs, small businesses and charities across Cranleigh and the Surrey Hills.
