There’s a moment, just before I press the shutter, when time seems to slow.
A glance, a laugh, a quiet pause. I see it coming and I know it’s going to be something special.
That’s the magic of photography, and it’s one of many reasons I love what I do.
Being a photographer isn’t just about cameras and lenses. It’s about people, stories and the way light falls across a face.
Here are ten reasons why I truly love being a photographer.
1 – I get to meet all kinds of people
Every photoshoot introduces me to someone new.
I’ve photographed small business owners launching their dream, families gathering for a rare reunion, and individuals simply wanting a portrait that feels like them.
It’s similar to the experience I enjoyed during my first career, as a Chartered Financial Planner. I get to hear about lives, hopes, dreams, and everything in between.
I learn about their lives, hear their stories, and often end up having a good chat before we even start taking photos. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
2 – I help people feel seen
So many of us feel awkward in front of the camera. I’ve lost count of how many times someone has said, “I hate having my photo taken.”
But then we spend some time together, they relax, and the photos show them as they really are. It’s such a good feeling to hear someone say, “That actually looks like me. And I love it.”
Helping people see themselves in a new way is something I never get tired of.
3 – Every day is different
One day I’m photographing a creative business owner in their studio. The next, I’m at a charity event capturing moments as they happen.
No two shoots are ever the same. I thrive on that variety. It keeps me on my toes and means I’m always learning something new.
4 – I get to be creative
Photography is part instinct, part planning, and part play. I love looking at a space and imagining how the light will work.
I enjoy finding interesting backdrops or suggesting a location that really suits the person I’m photographing.
There’s a creative freedom in photography that keeps me excited about my work.
5 – I work in beautiful places
Living in the Surrey Hills, I’m lucky to be surrounded by amazing locations. From woodland paths to village greens, old barns to modern studios, there’s always somewhere lovely to shoot.
I love making the most of the natural beauty around Cranleigh and finding new corners that work perfectly for portraits or brand shoots.
6 – I tell real stories
Whether it’s a series of portraits or the flow of an event, I’m always looking to tell a story. Not just the polished, posed version.
I look for the in-between moments, the ones that often get missed. A quick smile between friends, a hand on a shoulder, the way someone looks when they think no one is watching.
These are the images that really stay with you.
7 – I create lasting memories
Photographs have a way of freezing time. A good portrait can last for years, reminding someone of who they were at that moment.
I often think about how the photos I take today might be looked at in ten or twenty years. That’s a real privilege, and something I never take for granted.
8 – I get to support small businesses and charities
A big part of my work is with people building something meaningful. That might be a small shop, a one-person business or a local charity doing good work.
I love being able to help them show what they do through thoughtful photography. Strong images can make a real difference, especially when you’re trying to connect with your community.
9 – I keep learning
Photography is one of those crafts where there’s always more to learn. Whether it’s trying a new editing style, experimenting with lighting, or learning how to make people feel more comfortable in front of the camera, I enjoy the challenge.
That curiosity keeps me growing, both as a photographer and as a person.
10 – It feels like honest work
There’s something deeply satisfying about capturing a genuine moment. It might only last a second, but when you get it right, it speaks volumes. I love the quiet integrity of that.
It’s not about flashy tricks or filters. It’s about being present, paying attention, and doing justice to the people and stories in front of me.
Photography has taken me to places I never expected, both literally and in terms of the people I’ve met along the way.
It’s personal, it’s creative and it’s endlessly rewarding. That’s why I love being a photographer.
If you’re looking for someone to capture your story, whether it’s a portrait, an event, or a day in your life or business, I’d love to hear from you.
