Storytelling through a Sequence of Portraits

20/06/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

A single portrait can capture a person’s expression, style and presence in a powerful way. But when you bring together a sequence of portraits, something deeper can emerge. The story of who they are begins to unfold.

Telling a story through photography doesn’t mean using props or complex setups. It’s about creating a series of images that work together to show different sides of a person. This might include a mix of posed and candid shots, changes in setting or light, and small details that help to build a fuller picture.

This approach is especially useful for people who want more than just one image to represent them.

For example, someone launching a small business may want to show not just their professional headshot, but also what they do each day. One portrait might show them working at a desk, another might capture them meeting clients or using their tools. A few close-ups might focus on their hands or workspace. Together, these images tell a richer story than any one photo could on its own.

A sequence can also show changes over time. This might be subtle – a shift in mood, a change in the light – or more deliberate, like moving between indoor and outdoor settings.

For families, couples or individuals marking a life event, it’s a lovely way to record the feeling of that moment from different angles.

The most effective portrait sequences tend to have a natural flow. They don’t need to follow a strict order, but they do work best when there’s a clear sense of purpose. That could be showing a journey, capturing different moods, or simply revealing more about someone’s character. The key is to keep the images consistent in style while allowing each one to say something new.

Planning is important. Before the shoot, it helps to think about what you want the sequence to say. Are you trying to show your creative process, your role in a team, or your connection to a place? This will guide choices like location, clothing and timing. You don’t need to overthink it – just a clear idea of your goals will go a long way.

For businesses, charities or organisations, a portrait sequence can make a strong impression. It can show the people behind the scenes, the spaces where work happens, and the passion that drives the work. These kinds of images are often far more engaging than a standard headshot because they invite the viewer to learn more.

Portrait sequences also work well for websites, social media and printed materials. When used thoughtfully, they give a sense of continuity and personality that helps people connect with you or your brand.

At its heart, storytelling through portraits is about honesty. It’s about showing yourself in a way that feels natural and true. When done well, a portrait sequence doesn’t just show how you look – it shares a part of your life, and invites others to step into your world for a moment.

If you’re thinking about creating a sequence of portraits to tell your story, I’d love to help.
