Refresh Your Profile: Why the End of Summer is Perfect for a New Portrait

22/08/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

I’m sorry to say it, but summer is drawing to a close. The days have a distinctly more autumnal feel, but there’s also that dawning sense of renewal in the air.

As we prepare for the kids to return to school or college, routines will inevitably fall back into place. Many of us are starting to set goals for the final third of the year.

It’s also the perfect time to update your profile photo, whether for LinkedIn, your business website, or social media.

A new portrait photo can do wonders for your professional image, ensuring you put your best face forward as you head into a busy autumn.

Here are five practical tips for choosing the right photographer and getting the most out of your portrait session.

1 – Look for a Photographer Who Understands Your Style and Needs

Every photographer is different. I’m sure no other photographer in the world is just like me! So, finding a photographer whose work is right for you is essential.

Do you want natural, candid shots or something more polished and professional?

Start by browsing portfolios and finding a photographer whose photos speak to you.

If you’re a business owner, you might want someone with specific experience with corporate photography. Creative professionals may want someone with a flair for artistic shots.

2 – Consider the Location

I’m blessed to live, work, and play in the Surrey Hills. This place offers so many stunning options for making a portrait photo stand out from the crowd.

Choosing the right setting can add a unique touch to your photo, whether we opt for a sun-dappled woodland or a charming village scene.

Talk to your photographer about location options to agree on a spot that complements your personality and professional brand.

3 – Timing is Everything

The golden hours—just after sunrise or before sunset—offer the best natural light for outdoor portraits. This soft, flattering light can make your skin glow and warm your photos.

One benefit of shorter daylight hours is that golden hour is starting to become a slightly more sociable time of day!

If you’re after an indoor shoot, either find a space with plenty of natural light (big windows!) or space to set up some nice, big softboxes to recreate more controllable natural light with strobes.

4 – What to Wear

The clothes you choose to wear should reflect your personal style and the message you want to get across.

Solid colours work best in photos. It’s important to keep the focus on your face, as our eyes are easily drawn to busy patterns that can create distractions.

Bringing a few options to the shoot is always a good idea, so your photographer can help you choose what looks best on camera.

5 – Communication is Key

A good photographer will take the time to understand your needs and make you feel comfortable during the shoot. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or voice any concerns you have before and during the session.

The more relaxed and confident you feel, the better your photos will turn out.

As the seasons change, so do we. The end of summer is an excellent time to refresh your online presence with a new portrait that reflects the best version of yourself.

Ready to update your profile photo?

Now is the time to take action. Whether you’re looking to boost your professional image or want a fresh, new look, a well-crafted portrait can make all the difference.

Get in touch today to schedule your session and start the new season with confidence!
