Is Surrey’s Best Portrait Photographer Near You?

28/10/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

Searching for the “best portrait photographer in Surrey” sounds sensible.

It’s probably what a lot of people type into Google when they decide their current headshot needs to be quietly retired.

But “best” is a slippery word.

Best for what?

Best for corporate headshots?

Best for actors?

Best for families?

Best for personal branding?

Best for dramatic studio portraits?

Best for relaxed outdoor portraits?

Best for people who hate having their photo taken and would rather be at the dentist?

That last one might be me, actually.

The truth is, there isn’t one best portrait photographer for everyone.

There’s the right photographer for you.

That’s a much more useful thing to search for.

Style matters

Every photographer sees people differently.

Some love bright, clean, polished images.

Some prefer dark, moody portraits.

Some shoot everything outdoors.

Some work only in natural light.

Some love highly stylised fashion-inspired portraits.

Some are brilliant at families, newborns, weddings, products, pets, food, interiors, or all sorts of things I don’t do and have no desire to pretend I do.

My work is mostly about people.

Headshots, portraits, personal branding, actors, musicians, creatives, professionals and small business owners who need to show up with more confidence.

I want portraits to feel honest, useful and properly like the person in front of me.

Not overdone.

Not stiff.

Not fake.

Just strong, well-lit images that help someone look credible, approachable and worth trusting.

That won’t be the right style for everyone.

And that’s fine.

Don’t choose a photographer by price alone

I understand that price matters.

Everyone has a budget, and nobody wants a surprise invoice that makes them stare silently at the wall.

But choosing a portrait photographer purely because they’re the cheapest can be risky.

A headshot or portrait is often doing an important job.

It might be the first image someone sees on your website, LinkedIn profile, speaker bio, press page, dating profile, book jacket or business proposal.

It helps people form an impression before they’ve read a word.

So the question isn’t only, “How much does it cost?”

The better question is, “Will this photograph help me show up properly?”

A cheap photo you don’t like, don’t use, or feel slightly embarrassed by isn’t good value.

A strong portrait you actually use for years is.

Look at the portfolio properly

Before booking any photographer, look carefully at their work.

Not just the best image on the homepage.

Look through a proper selection.

Do the people look comfortable?

Do their expressions feel natural?

Is the lighting flattering?

Is the style consistent?

Can you imagine yourself in that kind of image?

Do the portraits feel like real people, or do they look awkward, over-posed or heavily edited?

You don’t need to understand the technical side.

You don’t need to know about lenses, lighting ratios or retouching techniques.

Just ask yourself a simple question.

Do I like how these people are being shown?

If the answer is yes, you’re probably in the right place.

If the answer is no, keep looking.

Don’t ask a photographer to copy someone else

It’s useful to gather inspiration before a shoot.

A few examples can help explain the kind of mood, style or purpose you have in mind.

That’s absolutely fine.

But there’s a difference between sharing references and asking a photographer to copy someone else’s work.

If you love another photographer’s style, the honest answer is usually to book that photographer.

Every photographer has their own way of seeing, lighting, directing and editing.

Trying to force one photographer to work like another rarely ends well.

You’ll probably feel frustrated.

They’ll probably feel boxed in.

And the images may end up feeling like a slightly awkward tribute act.

It’s much better to choose someone because you already like what they do.

The experience matters as much as the final photo

A good portrait is not just about the camera.

It’s about how you feel during the shoot.

If you feel tense, rushed or judged, that will probably show.

If you feel guided, listened to and properly looked after, that shows too.

This is especially important if you don’t enjoy being photographed.

Most of my clients arrive saying some version of:

“I’m not photogenic.”

“I hate having my photo taken.”

“I never know what to do with my hands.”

“I need you to tell me what to do.”

That’s completely normal.

A good portrait photographer won’t expect you to arrive knowing how to pose. They’ll guide you through it.

They’ll help with posture, angles, hands, expression and all the small details that make the difference.

They’ll also know when to stop fiddling and let you be yourself.

That’s where the better photos usually happen.

Ask how the shoot works

Before you book, it’s worth understanding the process.

How long is the session?

Where will it happen?

Can you change outfits?

Will you be directed throughout?

Can you see images as you go?

How many final images are included?

Do you choose your favourites?

How are the images edited?

When will you receive them?

These questions matter.

A professional photographer should be able to explain the process clearly, without making you feel awkward for asking.

You should know what you’re booking, what happens next and what you’ll receive at the end.

Mystery is overrated.

Especially when you’re paying someone to point a camera at your face.

Local knowledge helps

There are plenty of excellent photographers across Surrey and beyond.

But working with someone local can be helpful.

If you’re based in Cranleigh, Guildford, Godalming, Horsham, Dorking, Haslemere or elsewhere around the Surrey Hills, a local photographer will know the light, locations and practicalities.

They’ll know which outdoor spots work well.

They’ll know when a location gets too busy.

They’ll know where the parking is less annoying.

They’ll know which woodland paths, village streets, parks and open spaces can provide useful backdrops without turning the shoot into a full expedition.

Local knowledge isn’t everything, but it can make the session easier and more relaxed.

And easier and more relaxed is usually good for portraits.

Studio or outdoor portraits?

The best location depends on what you need.

Studio portraits are great if you want clean, controlled, professional images with proper lighting and no weather drama.

Outdoor portraits can feel more relaxed and natural, especially if you want a sense of place or a softer background.

Workplace portraits can be ideal for personal branding, because they show more of your process, environment and personality.

There’s no single right answer.

The best choice depends on how you want to be seen and where the images will be used.

A good photographer will help you work that out.

The right photographer won’t be right for everyone

I turn down enquiries when they’re not the right fit.

Not often, but it happens.

Sometimes someone wants a style I don’t shoot.

Sometimes they need a service I don’t offer.

Sometimes they’re looking for something that another photographer would do much better.

That’s not a problem.

In fact, it’s better for everyone.

The best results come when the client likes the photographer’s work, understands the process and trusts the direction.

If those things aren’t there, it’s probably not the right match.

A portrait session is personal.

You need to feel comfortable with the person behind the camera.

So, is Surrey’s best portrait photographer near you?

Maybe.

But the better question is this:

Who is the best portrait photographer for what you need?

Look for someone whose work you genuinely like.

Someone whose style fits the way you want to be seen.

Someone who can guide you properly.

Someone who understands that a good portrait is about more than making you look tidy and in focus.

Someone who can help you feel comfortable enough to look like yourself.

If you’re looking for headshots, portraits or personal branding photography in Cranleigh, the Surrey Hills or nearby, I’d be very happy to talk.

Have a look through my work first.

If it feels like the kind of portrait you’d be proud to use, we’re probably a good fit.
