You are standing in front of the camera and your brain starts running wild.
Is my smile too big? Do I look tired? What is my left eyebrow doing?
Instead of being in the moment, you are analysing every muscle in your face like you are preparing for a medical report. The result is an expression that looks stiff, unsure, and nothing like you at your best.
The truth is, your face will not behave if you keep bossing it around. The more you think about how it looks, the less natural it becomes.
The trick to looking great in photos is to stop micromanaging your own features and start letting them do what they do when you are relaxed.
Get Out of Your Own Head
Overthinking happens because you are imagining how the photo will look before it is even taken. That is a guaranteed shortcut to tension.
Shift your focus away from yourself. Listen to what the photographer is saying. Look around at the space you are in.
Think about the person you are making the photo for, whether that is a client, a friend, or your future self. The less attention you give to your own face, the better it will behave.
Use Micro-Movements
Small, easy movements help stop your expression from freezing. Tilt your head slightly, glance in a different direction, let your eyes wander briefly before coming back to the camera.
Even taking a breath can soften your expression and make your eyes look more alive. A good photographer will keep you moving in subtle ways so you never lock into one stiff pose.
Think About Something Real
A fake smile is obvious. Your mouth might turn up, but your eyes will stay flat.
To get a genuine expression, think about something that makes you laugh, a person you like, or a place you would rather be.
You do not even have to find it hilarious. A flicker of real feeling is enough to warm your eyes and relax your mouth.
Let Your Photographer Do the Watching
It is their job to see what is happening with your face. They will tell you if you need to lift your chin, soften your expression, or turn slightly.
You do not need to constantly check yourself or try to guess what looks good. Trust them to guide you.
The more you hand over control, the more natural your photos will look.
Forget About Perfect
The best portraits are rarely the ones where every hair is in place and every feature is perfectly arranged. They are the ones that capture personality, warmth, or a fleeting look that feels true to you.
If you spend the whole shoot chasing a flawless, magazine-cover face, you will miss those moments.
When you stop overthinking, your expressions become more fluid and genuine. Your eyes look alive, your posture relaxes, and you start to look like yourself on a really good day rather than someone trying to pass a facial audition.
If you want portraits where your personality comes through without you having to think about it, I can help.
I work with people in Cranleigh and the Surrey Hills to capture authentic, flattering images without a hint of overthinking.
