How Often Should You Update Your Headshot?

27/07/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

You might not give it much thought, but your headshot plays a big part in how others see you.

Whether it’s on LinkedIn, your website or your business card, your headshot is often the first impression people have of you. And first impressions matter.

But once you’ve had one taken, how do you know when it’s time for a new one?

The answer isn’t always straightforward. There’s no fixed rule, but there are some clear signs and helpful guidelines that can make the decision easier.

In this post, we’ll explore how often you should update your headshot, and why keeping it current is worth the effort.

If You’ve Changed Your Appearance, It’s Time

The most obvious reason to update your headshot is if your appearance has changed. That might mean a new hairstyle, different glasses, weight loss or gain, or even just ageing over a few years.

If someone meets you in person and feels surprised by how different you look, your headshot is out of date.

A good rule of thumb is to update your headshot every two to three years. But if you’ve gone through a big change in the meantime, don’t wait. Your headshot should always reflect how you actually look now, not how you looked five years ago.

Your Career Has Moved On

If your headshot still shows you in a suit and tie, but you’ve started your own creative business and now work in jeans and a T-shirt, that mismatch can be confusing.

A headshot isn’t just about how you look, it’s also about how you present yourself to the world.

As your career evolves, so should your image. Maybe you’ve shifted from corporate work to running a small business, or you’ve started speaking at events or working more in the public eye.

These are all moments to refresh your headshot so that it fits where you are now, not where you used to be.

You’re Not Happy with Your Current Photo

Sometimes, it’s not about time or change. It’s simply that your current headshot doesn’t feel right.

Maybe it was taken in a rush, or the lighting was poor, or it just doesn’t feel like you. If your headshot doesn’t make you feel confident and comfortable, it’s time to replace it.

Your headshot should make you feel proud. It should look like you on your best day – relaxed, professional and approachable. If it doesn’t, you’re missing out on a powerful tool that could help you make stronger connections.

You’re Updating Your Branding or Website

A website refresh is the perfect time to think about your headshot. If you’re investing in new branding or a redesigned site, an outdated photo will stand out – and not in a good way. Everything should feel consistent and well put together.

This is especially important if you’re a small business owner or freelancer. You are your brand, and your face is often the first thing people see. A fresh, professional headshot helps build trust and gives your online presence a polished, current look.

Social Media Is a Big Part of Your Work

If you use platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram or even Zoom regularly, then your headshot is out there all the time. These platforms are all visual. A great headshot helps you stand out, while an old or grainy one can hold you back.

If you’re networking, pitching to clients or building a following, it’s worth checking your profile pictures every year or so. Ask yourself: does this image still represent me? If the answer is no, it’s time to book a session.

Think Seasonally, Not Just Annually

Some people like to update their headshot with the seasons, especially if their work is creative or based around visual storytelling.

For example, if you’re a fitness coach or yoga teacher, you might want to show a different side of yourself depending on the time of year. A summery, outdoor headshot feels different from one taken in a cosy indoor studio.

Even if you don’t change your photo four times a year, thinking seasonally is a good way to check in with your image. Does your current headshot still suit the tone you want to strike? Is it working for the audience you’re trying to reach right now?

It’s About More Than Just the Photo

Updating your headshot isn’t just a vanity project. It’s about staying relevant and being true to yourself. It’s about giving people an honest, up-to-date picture of who they’re about to meet or work with.

In a digital world where so many first impressions happen online, a fresh headshot gives you a head start.

A good headshot shows that you care about how you present yourself. It makes people more likely to trust you and take you seriously. And most of all, it helps you feel confident in your own skin – because you know you look your best.
