How much should you expect to pay for professional headshot photography in Surrey?
It’s a sensible question, but the answer depends on more than the amount of time you spend in front of the camera.
A quick headshot for LinkedIn is a very different job from creating a varied collection of professional portraits for your website, speaking engagements, press coverage and social media.
Both can be described as headshot photography. But they involve different amounts of planning, studio time, lighting, image selection and editing.
When comparing headshot photography prices in Surrey, the most useful question isn’t simply, “Who is cheapest?”
It’s, “What do I actually receive, and will it give me the photographs I need?”
Transparent pricing makes that decision easier. It allows you to understand the options, decide how much variety you need and avoid paying for a session that is either too limited or far more involved than necessary.
What affects the cost of a professional headshot?
Professional headshot prices usually reflect the time involved before, during and after the session.
The photography itself is only one part of the job.
A session may also include an initial conversation, advice about clothing, preparation of the studio, several lighting setups, direction throughout, tethered viewing, image selection, individual retouching and delivery through an online gallery.
The price will usually change according to the following factors.
Session length
The length of the session affects how much variety we can create.
A shorter session is often enough when you need one clear purpose, such as updating your LinkedIn photo or replacing an outdated headshot on your company website.
We can concentrate on one outfit, one or two backgrounds and a focused selection of expressions.
A longer session gives us more room to experiment.
That might include several outfits, different lighting styles, sitting and standing portraits, a mixture of headshots and wider images, and photographs designed for different platforms.
More time doesn’t simply mean taking more versions of the same picture. It allows us to create genuinely different images.
The right session length depends on whether you need a simple update or a broader professional image library.
Number of finished photographs
Some photographers charge a session fee and then sell photographs separately. Others include an agreed number of edited images within the package.
My sessions include a clear number of finished photographs, so you know what you’re paying for before you book.
The number matters because one image can become restrictive surprisingly quickly.
Your LinkedIn profile, company website, email signature, press biography and conference speaker page may all benefit from slightly different photographs.
Using exactly the same picture everywhere creates consistency, but it doesn’t always give you the flexibility to suit each setting.
A small selection of finished images allows you to choose different expressions, crops and levels of formality while still presenting a consistent version of yourself.
Studio versus workplace photography
A studio session is usually the simplest way to create controlled, consistent headshots.
The lighting, backgrounds and equipment are ready, and we aren’t dependent on the weather or the available light within an office.
My Cranleigh studio works well for individual headshots, portraits and smaller sessions where we want full control over the finished look.
Workplace photography may involve extra time for travel, setup and finding suitable areas within the building.
It can still be the right choice.
Photographing you in your own office, clinic, studio or workshop gives the images more context. It can help potential clients understand where you work and connect the portrait more closely with your profession.
For teams, photographing everyone at the workplace is often more practical than asking each person to travel separately.
The best choice depends on whether you need a clean, focused portrait or a stronger sense of place.
Outfit and lighting changes
One outfit and one lighting setup can produce several good expressions, but the final images will naturally feel similar.
Changing your jacket, shirt, top or accessories can create a noticeably different photograph. Changing the background or lighting can shift the mood even further.
Soft, open lighting can feel friendly and approachable. Stronger contrast can add confidence and authority. A brighter background might suit an informal business, while a darker setup can create something more dramatic or editorial.
Each change takes time.
The lights may need to be repositioned and tested. The background may need to change. We’ll review how the clothing works with the new setup and adjust your pose and expression to match.
A longer session gives us the freedom to make these changes properly rather than rushing through them.
Individual versus team sessions
An individual headshot session is built around one person.
We can spend time discussing what you need, helping you settle in, refining your expression and making small adjustments until the photographs feel right.
Team headshots work differently.
The priority is usually consistency, efficiency and making sure every person receives the same standard of photograph.
The cost may be based on the number of people, the time required or a half-day or full-day rate. It can also depend on whether the team is photographed at your workplace or in the studio.
Larger teams may need scheduling support, portable lighting and a temporary setup within an office or meeting room.
Although the time spent with each person may be shorter, there is additional work involved in organising, photographing and editing a consistent set of images.
Retouching
Professional editing is part of the finished result.
This includes adjustments to colour, exposure, contrast, crop and overall finish. I’ll also deal with temporary distractions such as stray hairs, small blemishes, marks on clothing or background issues where appropriate.
Good retouching shouldn’t make you look artificial.
You shouldn’t receive a photograph with plastic skin, altered facial features or so much smoothing that you no longer look like yourself.
The aim is to produce a polished and credible version of the person who stood in front of the camera.
Retouching each selected image individually takes time, which is one reason the number of finished photographs affects the price.
Usage requirements
Most individual clients need their photographs for LinkedIn, websites, social media, press biographies and general business marketing.
Those uses are straightforward and are covered by my normal portrait sessions.
Some commissions may involve broader commercial usage, such as a large advertising campaign, extensive paid media, product packaging or national promotion.
In those situations, the intended use may affect the quote because the photographs have a greater commercial value and may require additional licensing.
For most professionals and small businesses, this won’t make the process complicated. We’ll simply discuss where you plan to use the photographs before the session.
My current headshot and portrait prices
I offer three main options for professional headshots and portraits.
Each package includes the photography session, direction throughout, tethered viewing where appropriate, image selection, professional editing and delivery of the finished high-resolution photographs through a private online gallery.
Essential Session: £195
The Essential Session is designed for someone who needs a simple, focused update.
It includes around 45 minutes of photography and three fully edited images. The session can take place in my Cranleigh studio or at an agreed local location.
This option works well when you need a new LinkedIn headshot, an updated website portrait or a small number of consistent professional images.
We’ll have enough time to create several expressions and make small adjustments, but the session is deliberately focused.
It’s the right choice when three strong photographs will cover everything you currently need.
Standard Session: £275
The Standard Session includes up to 90 minutes of photography and ten fully edited images.
The extra time allows us to create more variety.
You can bring outfit changes, and we can explore different backgrounds, crops, expressions and lighting styles. We can also create a mixture of close headshots and wider portraits.
This is often the best option for professionals and business owners who need photographs for several purposes.
You might choose a friendly image for LinkedIn, a more confident portrait for your About page, a wider photograph for your website and a selection of less formal options for social media.
The Standard Session gives you a useful range without turning the shoot into a large branding production.
Signature Session: £395
The Signature Session is for someone who wants a broader and more varied set of portraits.
It includes extended photography time and 20 fully edited images.
This option gives us room to create multiple looks, lighting setups and clothing changes. We can produce traditional headshots, wider portraits and more creative or editorial images within the same session.
It’s a good fit for business owners, speakers, performers, consultants and other professionals who need a substantial image library.
It can also suit someone preparing for a new website, business launch or period of greater public visibility.
The Signature Session isn’t simply about receiving more files. It’s about having enough time and flexibility to create photographs with genuinely different uses.
Which headshot session should you choose?
Start by thinking about where the photographs will appear.
When you only need to replace one old profile picture and want a few strong choices, the Essential Session will probably be enough.
When you need photographs for LinkedIn, your website and regular online content, the Standard Session usually provides the best balance.
When you want a wider library with several outfits, lighting styles and types of portrait, the Signature Session gives us the space to create it.
Choosing a cheaper session isn’t good value if you quickly realise that you needed more variety.
Equally, there’s no reason to book the largest package when three carefully created headshots will do the job perfectly.
The goal is to choose the session that gives you the range of photographs you need.
