Headshot Tips for Busy Entrepreneurs: Look Professional, Even When You’re Short on Time

01/06/2025 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

When you’re running your own business, your time is your most valuable resource.

There’s always something to do and someone to meet. Between emails, phone calls and client work, fitting in a headshot session might feel like a luxury you can’t afford.

But here’s the truth: your headshot is often the first impression people have of you. Whether it’s on LinkedIn, your website or your email signature, a good photo helps people trust you. And trust is everything in business.

The good news is, getting a great headshot doesn’t have to take up hours of your day.

With the right approach and some preparation, you can get a professional photo that reflects who you are and what your brand stands for — without it becoming a chore.

Let’s look at how busy entrepreneurs can get the most from their headshot session with minimal fuss.

Dress like yourself, but smarter

When you’re short on time, you don’t want to waste precious minutes second-guessing your outfit.

The key is to wear something you feel comfortable in, but that also gives a polished impression. Think of it like a slightly smarter version of what you’d wear to meet a client.

Stick to solid colours that flatter your skin tone. Avoid busy patterns or logos that could distract from your face. If you wear glasses, bring them.

If you’re known for a particular style, like bold jewellery or a colourful shirt, bring that too. Your headshot should look like you on a good day.

Keep grooming simple and stress-free

There’s no need to book a full salon session before your headshot. But it’s worth checking your hair, beard or fringe the day before. If you usually wear make-up, aim for a natural look that evens your skin tone without being too heavy.

For men, a fresh shave or neat beard trim can make a big difference. For everyone, drinking plenty of water and getting a decent night’s sleep the night before will help your skin look its best.

A good photographer will also help with lighting and angles to bring out your best features, so you don’t have to worry about looking perfect.

Choose the right setting

Many entrepreneurs assume they need a studio for their headshot, but that’s not always the case.

If you’re tight on time, it might be easier to arrange a shoot at your office, home, or even a nearby park or café.

Natural light is often the most flattering, and having a familiar setting in the background can also help tell your story. A charity founder in their workspace, or a personal trainer in the park, often makes more sense than a plain white background.

Think about where you feel most at ease and what best reflects your brand. A photographer who specialises in personal branding will help you choose a location that fits your style and message.

Relax — you don’t have to ‘pose’

Many people feel awkward in front of a camera, especially if they’re in a rush. But you don’t need to practise poses or worry about smiling the ‘right’ way. The most effective headshots are relaxed, friendly and natural. You just need to be yourself.

A good photographer will guide you through the session, giving you simple directions and putting you at ease. The aim is to capture genuine expressions, not staged ones.

You’re not trying to look like a model — you’re trying to look like a professional, trustworthy version of yourself.

Make the most of your time

If you’re booking a session, it makes sense to get a few different shots while you’re at it. You might only need one photo for your LinkedIn profile today, but having a range of images — some formal, some casual — will give you flexibility for future use.

Ask for a mix of head-and-shoulders shots and wider frames. Get a few with different expressions: smiling, serious, approachable. These images can be used on your website, in blog posts, in press features, on speaker bios and more. All from one quick session.

If you work with a photographer who understands your time is limited, they’ll plan the session carefully, so you’re in and out with everything you need in under an hour.

Update regularly, not just once

Your headshot shouldn’t be a once-every-ten-years thing. As your business evolves, your image should too. A fresh photo every year or two keeps your brand current and reminds your audience that you’re active and engaged.

It doesn’t have to be a big production. Once you find a photographer you trust, updating your headshot can be quick and straightforward — something you fit in between meetings, not something you dread.

Final thoughts

A strong, professional headshot isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a smart investment in your personal brand and your business. And it doesn’t need to eat into your packed schedule.

With the right preparation and a relaxed, efficient shoot, you can walk away with photos that show the real you — confident, credible and approachable.

I’d be happy to help you look your best, even when time is short.
