Digital Downshift: Embracing Simplicity and Intentionality in 2024

20/05/2024 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas, Photography

It’s 2024, and technology is influencing every aspect of our lives. I’m pushing back by making a conscious shift towards analogue this year. Here’s why.

Right now, I’m experimenting with some vintage SLR film cameras, downsizing my Tesla for a small petrol hatchback, and switching off my iPhone for a chunk of each day to use a ‘dumbphone’ instead.

Am I ditching digital? Not entirely, but certainly trying to find a healthier balance.

Those who know me will tell you that I’m a little tech-obsessive. In many cases, I’m an early adopter of the latest toys. I’m by no means a Luddite.

But I am inspired by the ‘slow’ movement, which promotes a slower, more intentional approach to life. I’m keen to take back control of my tech use rather than allowing tech to control me.

Vintage SLRs

There’s something magical about taking photos with a vintage SLR. I’ve got around a dozen in my collection now, both 35mm and 120 film.

The deliberate composition of each shot and the anticipation of developing film is a far cry from the instant gratification of digital photography.

I’m not abandoning my digital camera. Shooting on digital remains essential for efficiency, quick turnaround times, and high-quality results that my clients expect.

However, adding analogue into the mix allows me to slow down, appreciate the process of photography, and offer clients a unique, authentic experience.

EV to ICE

I’m in the process of swapping my Tesla for a small petrol hatchback. Yes, I’ll miss the instant acceleration and massive touchscreen with its Spotify, YouTube and arcade games. I won’t miss the range anxiety on long drives.

Moving to a smaller ICE car is about simplifying my life, aligning with a desire to reduce reliance on high-tech solutions. It’s also about allowing me to reconnect with the driving experience and encouraging me to reduce my environmental impact by walking and cycling more.

Dumbphone time

Switching from the latest iPhone to a Nokia 105 for part of each day is about reclaiming my time and focus. I’m not ditching the smartphone, but I will be limiting its use.

Hopefully, eliminating the everpresent connected screen will allow me to be more present in the moment, reducing the constant barrage of notifications and distractions.

I’m seeking quality over quantity. I want to spend more meaningful time with loved ones, fully engaged in my surroundings without the constant pull of a smartphone screen.

Mental Health Benefits

Constant connectivity can breed anxiety. I’m hoping that, by integrating more analogue practices, I can reduce stress levels and foster a greater sense of calm.

Patience is a forgotten skill in our fast-paced world. I want it to make a comeback in my life.

Whether it’s waiting for a film to be developed or not having instant access to information, these small acts of patience are designed to ground me.

Fostering Authentic Experiences

The analogue approach fosters authenticity.

In photography, it means capturing raw, unfiltered moments. In life, it means genuine interactions without the digital veneer.

I strive to bring this authenticity into my work, offering clients photos that resonate on a deeper level.

***

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the relentless pace of digital life, I encourage you to join me in exploring the benefits of analogue.

Whether it’s picking up a vintage camera, simplifying your tech, or just taking a break from your smartphone, small changes can significantly improve your quality of life.

Are you interested in embracing a slower, more intentional approach to technology?
