Embracing Individuality: Influencing Your Social Media Algorithm

16/10/2023 Posted by Martin Bamford Ideas

Social media platforms come and go. The latest new kid on the block, Instagram spin-off Threads, is working hard to challenge our perception of the online experience.

The latest trend on Threads has users explicitly listing the content they wish to see in their feeds to influence the algorithm.

This trend is intriguing for various reasons, but it also serves as a potent reminder that we’re all individuals in the digital landscape.

Remember the Monty Python classic Life of Brian, where Brian famously proclaimed, “You’re all individuals!”. Comedic “I’m not” retort aside, Threads users echo this sentiment by staking a claim to their individuality in a world of sameness.

The content we consume and create should reflect our unique tastes, interests, and values.

One striking example on Threads is a user who posted their wishlist for the perfect feed: music lovers, musicians, artists, light, love, photographers, writers, neurodivergent weirdos, yogis (or at least yoga pants), videographers, voiceover artists, and peace. This user unapologetically declares their passions, creating a roadmap for their digital journey.

So, what about you? What would make up your list?

Threads users are not just wishfully thinking; they’re actively curating their social media experience to align with their preferences. Here are some practical steps to help you do the same:

Reflect on Your Passions: Take a moment to identify the topics and interests that truly resonate with you. What lights up your world?

Curate Your Follow List: Follow accounts that align with your passions. Seek creators, communities, and content that inspire and resonate with you.

Create Content that Reflects You: Be bold and share your unique perspective and interests. Be authentic and let your individuality shine through your posts.

While curating your online world to better align with your you-ness is good, be mindful of the potential risks. An echo chamber can quickly form, isolating us from diverse and challenging perspectives.

So, make a concerted effort to continue engaging with content that challenges your worldview and broadens your horizons.

Threads users set an inspiring example by taking charge of their digital lives and embracing their individuality. What would your list look like, and how will you curate your online presence to reflect it?

Despite the vastness of the online world, we’re all individuals, and our content (consumed and created) should reflect that diversity.

Embrace your uniqueness and weirdness, and curate your digital world accordingly.

So, what’s on your list? Take the first step today, and let your digital journey genuinely reflect your individuality.
